✦Invocation

Mangala moorati maaruta nandana
Sakala amangala moola nikandana

You are the embodiment of blessings, Son of the Wind. You destroy the root of all that is inauspicious and harmful.

Shree Guru charana saroja raja nija manu mukuru sudhaari
Baranaun Raghubara bimala jasu jo daayaku phala chaari

Taking the dust of my Guru's lotus feet to polish the mirror of my heart, I sing the pure fame of the best of the Raghus, which bestows the four fruits of life.

Buddhi heena tanu jaanike sumiraun pawana kumaara
Bala budhi vidyaa dehu mohin harahu kalesa bikaara

Knowing myself to be without wit, I remember you, Son of the Wind. Grant me strength, intelligence and wisdom, and take away my sorrows and faults.

Refuge at the feet of Sita's lord, Ram.

1Jaya Hanumaan gyaana guna saagara,
Jaya Kapeesa tihun loka ujaagara

Hail Hanuman, ocean of wisdom. Hail Monkey Lord, you light up the three worlds.

2Raama doota atulita bala dhaamaa,
Anjani putra Pawanasuta naamaa

You are Ram's messenger, the abode of matchless power, Anjani's son, known as the Son of the Wind.

3Mahaabeera bikrama bajarangee,
Kumati niwaara sumati ke sangee

Great hero, mighty as a thunderbolt, remover of evil thoughts and companion of the good.

4Kanchana barana biraaja subesaa,
Kaanana kundala kunchita kesaa

Golden hued and splendidly adorned, with heavy earrings and curly locks.

5Haata bajra au dwajaa biraajai,
Kaandhe moonja janeu saajai

In your hands shine a mace and a banner, and a sacred thread adorns your shoulder.

6Shankara suwana Kesaree nandana,
Teja prataapa mahaa jaga bandana

You are an incarnation of Shiva and Kesari's son; your glory is revered throughout the world.

7Vidyaawaana gunee ati chaatura,
Raama kaaja karibe ko aatur

Wisest of the wise, virtuous and very clever, ever eager to do Ram's work.

8Prabhu charitra sunibe ko rasiyaa,
Raama Lakhana Seetaa mana basiyaa

You delight in hearing of the Lord's deeds; Ram, Lakshman and Sita dwell in your heart.

9Sookshma roopa dhari Siyahin dikhaawaa,
Bikata roopa dhari Lankaa jaraawaa

Assuming a tiny form you appeared to Sita; in an awesome form you burned Lanka.

10Bheema roopa dhari asura sanghaare,
Raamachandra ke kaaja sanvaare

Taking a dreadful form you slaughtered the demons, completing Lord Ram's work.

11Laaya sajeevana Lakhana jiyaaye,
Shree Raghubeera harashi ura laaye

Bringing the magic herb you revived Lakshman; Shri Ram embraced you with delight.

12Raghupati keenhee bahuta baraaee,
tuma mama priya Bharatahi sama bhaaee

The Lord of the Raghus praised you greatly: "You are as dear to me as my brother Bharat."

13Sahasa badana tumharo jasa gaawain,
asa kahi Shreepati kanta lagaawain

"Thousands of mouths will sing your fame." So saying, Lakshmi's Lord drew you to himself.

14Sanakaadika Brahmaadi muneesaa,
Naarada Saarada sahita Aheesaa

Sanak and the sages, Brahma and the great munis, Narada, Saraswati and the King of serpents,

15Yama Kubera digapaala jahaante,
kabi kobida kahi sake kahaante

Yama, Kubera and the guardians of the four quarters, poets and scholars: none can express your glory.

16Tuma upakaara Sugreevahin keenhaa,
Raama milaaya raaja pada deenhaa

You did great service for Sugriva; bringing him to Ram, you gave him kingship.

17Tumharo mantra Vibheeshana maanaa,
Lankeshwara bhaye saba jaga jaanaa

Vibhishana heeded your counsel; he became the Lord of Lanka, as the whole world knows.

18Yuga sahasra yojana para bhaanu,
leelyo taahi madhura phala jaanu

Though the sun is millions of miles away, you swallowed it, thinking it a sweet fruit.

19Prabhu mudrikaa meli mukha maaheen,
jaladhi laanghi gaye acharaja naaheen

Holding the Lord's ring in your mouth, it is no wonder that you leapt across the ocean.

20Durgama kaaja jagata ke jete,
sugama anugraha tumhare tete

Every difficult task in this world becomes easy by your grace.

21Raama duaare tuma rakhawaare,
hota na aagyaa binu paisaare

You are the guardian at Ram's door; no one enters without your permission.

22Saba sukha lahai tumhaaree sharanaa,
tuma rakshaka kaahu ko dara naa

All who take refuge in you find happiness; those you protect know no fear.

23Aapana teja samhaaro aapai,
teenon loka haanka ten kaanpai

You alone can withstand your own splendour; the three worlds tremble at your roar.

24Bhoota pisaacha nikata nahin aawai,
Mahaabeera jaba naama sunaawai

Ghosts and goblins cannot come near, Great Hero, when your name is uttered.

25Naasai roga hare saba peeraa,
japata nirantara Hanumata beeraa

All disease and pain is destroyed by constant repetition of your name, brave Hanuman.

26Sankata ten Hanumaana churaawai,
mana krama bachana dhyaana jo laawai

You release from affliction all those who remember you in thought, word and deed.

27Saba para Raama tapaswee raajaa,
tina ke kaaja sakala tuma saajaa

Ram, the ascetic king, reigns over all, but you carry out all his work.

28Aura manorata jo koee laawai,
soee amita jeewana phala paawai

Whoever comes to you with any longing obtains the abundance of the four fruits of life.

29Chaaron juga parataapa tumhaaraa,
hai parasidha jagata ujiyaaraa

Your splendour fills the four ages; your glory is renowned throughout the world.

30Saadhu santa ke tuma rakhawaare,
asura nikandana Raama dulaare

You are the guardian of saints and sages, the destroyer of demons and the darling of Ram.

31Ashta siddhi nau nidhi ke daataa,
asa bara deena Jaanakee Maataa

You grant the eight powers and nine treasures, by the boon you received from Mother Janaki.

32Raama rasaayana tumhare paasaa,
sadaa raho Raghupati ke daasaa

You hold the elixir of Ram's name and remain forever his servant.

33Tumhare bhajana Raama ko paawai,
janama janama ke dukha bisaraawai

Singing your praise, one finds Ram and forgets the sorrows of countless lives.

34Anta kaala Raghubara pura jaaee,
jahaan janama Hari bhakta kahaaee

At the final hour one goes to Ram's own abode, born there as a devotee of Hari.

35Aura devataa chitta na dharaee,
Hanumata se-ee sarva sukha karaee

Hold no other deity in your heart; from Hanuman you receive every happiness.

36Sankata katai mite saba peeraa,
jo sumire Hanumata bala beeraa

All trouble ends and all pain is removed for those who remember the mighty hero, Hanuman.

37Jai jai jai Hanumaana Gosaaee,
kripaa karahu gurudeva kee naaee

Victory, victory, victory to Lord Hanuman. Bestow your grace on me, as my Guru.

38Jo sata baara paata kara koee,
chootahi bandi mahaa sukha hoee

Whoever recites this a hundred times is released from bondage and gains great bliss.

39Jo yaha parai Hanumaana chaaleesaa,
hoya siddhi saakhee Gaureesaa

One who reads this Hanuman Chalisa attains perfection, as Shiva, the Lord of Gauri, is witness.

40Tulasee Daasa sadaa Hari cheraa,
keejai naata hridaya mahaan deraa

Says Tulsidas, who ever remains Hari's servant: "Lord, make your home in my heart."

Pawanatanaya sankata harana mangala moorati roopa
Raama Lakhana Seetaa sahita hridaya basahu sura bhoopa

Son of the Wind, remover of sorrow, embodiment of blessings: with Ram, Lakshman and Sita, dwell in my heart, O King of Gods.

An invocation to Shri Hanuman, transliteration with meaning.


✦Opening

nishchaya prema pratiti te
binaya kare sanaman
tehi ke karaja sakala shubha
siddha karen hanuman

Those who recite these verses with love and unwavering faith have all their good desires fulfilled by Hanuman.

✦The verses

jaya hanumanta santa hitakari
suni lijai prabhu araja hamari
jana ke kaja bilamba na kijai
atura dauri maha sukha dijai

Glory to Hanuman, benefactor of saints. Please hear our prayer. Do not delay the work of your devotees; come running and grant us great peace.

jaise kudi sindu wahi para
surasa badana paithi vistara
age ja-i lankini roka
marehu lata ga-i suraloka

Come as you did when you leapt across the ocean, expanded through the mouth of Surasa who tried to block your path, and on reaching Lanka sent the demoness Lankini to the heavens with a single kick.

jaya vibhishana ko sukha dinha
sita nirakhi parama pada linha
baga ujari sindhu mahan bora
ati atura yamakatura tora

In Lanka you gladdened Vibhishana, and by Sita's blessing you attained the supreme place. You laid waste the Ashoka grove and cast the trees into the ocean, breaking the very knife of Yama.

akshay kumar ko mari sanhara
luma lapeti lanka ko jara
laha samana lanka jari gai
jaya jaya dhuni surapura manha bhai

You slew Akshay Kumar and burnt Lanka with your tail. Lanka burned like molten wax, and the heavens rang with cries of glory to Hanuman.

aba bilamba kehi karana swami
kripa karahu ura antarayami
jaya jaya lakhana prana ke data
atura ho-i dukha karahu nipata

Why do you delay now, my Lord? You know what lies in the hearts of your devotees, so have mercy on me. Glory to you who restored Lakshman's life; come quickly and dispel my sorrow.

jai giridhara jai jai sukha sagara
sura samuha samarata bhata nagara
om hanu hanu hanu hanumanta hatile
bairihin maru vajra ke kile

Hail, holder of the mountain, ocean of happiness, wisest of gods and most skilful. O spirit indomitable, strike the enemies as though nailing them with a thunderbolt.

gada vajra lai bairihin maro
maharaja prabhu dasa ubaro
omkara hunkara mahavira dhavau
vajra gada hanu vilamba na lavo

O great king, save your servant by striking the enemies with your mace like a thunderbolt. Sounding the roar of Om, challenge them and crush them, and do not delay.

om hrim hrim hrim hanumanta kapisa
om hun hun hun hanu ari ura shisha
satya hohu hari shapata payake
ramaduta dharu maru dhayake

O Hanuman, Lord of the monkeys, I invoke you with Om hrim hrim hrim and Om hum hum hum. Strike the enemy in the chest and head. I swear by the name of Hari that all I say is true. O messenger of Ram, rush to attack at once.

jaya jaya jaya hanumanta agadha
dukha pavata jana kehi aparadha
puja japa tapa nema achara
nahin janata haun dasa tumhara

Glory to you, O fathomless Hanuman. For what offence is your devotee suffering so? This servant of yours knows nothing of worship, sacred mantras, penance, or the discipline of ritual and virtue.

bana upavana maga giri griha mahin
tumhare bala ham darapata nahin
panya paraun kara jori manavaun
yahi avasara aba kehi gohravaun

Relying on your strength I fear nothing anywhere, in forest, garden, mountain, road or home. I fall at your feet and entreat you with folded hands. To whom else shall I call at this hour?

jaya anjani kumara balavanta
shankara suvana bira hanumanta
badana karala kala kula ghalaka
rama sahaya sada pratipalaka

Hail Hanuman, all-powerful son of Anjani and brave son of Shiva. Fierce of form, destroyer of even the minions of Death, ever at Ram's side and protector of all.

bhuta preta pisacha nisachara
agni baitala kala mari mara
inhen maru tohi shapatha rama ki
rakhu natha maryada nama ki

Slay every evil spirit: ghosts, phantoms, goblins, demons, fire, vampires and calamities. Destroy them all in the name of Lord Ram, upholding the sanctity of the holy name.

janakasuta hari dasa kahavo
taki shapata bilamba na lavo
jaya jaya jaya dhuni hota akasha
sumirata hota dusaha dukha nasha

You are called the servant of Ram and Mother Sita; in their name, make no delay. The sky resounds with your glories, whose mere remembrance dispels unbearable sorrow.

charana sharana kara jori manavaun
yahi avasara aba kehi goharavaun
uthu uthu chalu tohi rama doha-i
panya paraun kara jori mana-i

I take refuge at your feet and plead with you; to whom else shall I call in this hour of urgent need? Rise, rise, come along, by the oath of Ram. I fall at your feet with folded hands.

om chan chan chan chan chapala chalanta
om hanu hanu hanu hanu hanumanta
om han han hanka deta kapi chanchal
om sam sam sahami parane khaladal

I implore you, O nimble-footed Hanuman, with the call of Om cham cham cham cham and Om hanu hanu hanu hanu. Strike swiftly like lightning. When the monkeys roar, the host of evil-doers flees in terror.

apane jana ko turata ubaro
sumirata hoya ananda hamaro
yahi bajaranga bana jehi mare
tahi kaho phir kauna ubare

Save your devotee at once; remembering you fills me with joy. Who can save the one struck by this Bajrang Baan, the arrow as mighty as a thunderbolt?

pata karai bajaranga bana ki
hanumata raksha karain prana ki
yaha bajaranga bana jo japai
tehi te bhuta preta saba kanpai

Those who recite this Bajrang Baan are protected for life by Hanuman. Even ghosts and evil spirits tremble before the one who chants it.

dhupa dey aru japai hamesha
take tana nahin rahai kalesha

Those who offer incense and chant his name always remain free from every bodily torment.

prema pratitihi kapi bhajai
sada dharai ura dhyan
tehi ke karaja sakala shubha
siddha karain hanuman

Those who worship Hanuman with faith, devotion and love, and always hold him in their hearts, have all their good desires fulfilled by Hanuman.
